IFS treats the mind as a family of parts — exiles, managers and firefighters — all trying to protect you. You learn to lead them from a calm, compassionate Self, and to unburden the parts carrying old pain.

How IFS works
- 1Notice a part of you that is activated and unblend from it — 'a part of me feels…'
- 2Approach the part from Self (curious, calm, compassionate) and ask what it is trying to protect.
- 3With the protector's permission, witness the exile carrying the original pain.
- 4Help the exile unburden what no longer belongs to it.

IFS FAQs
Is IFS evidence-based?
IFS is an evidence-based practice per the US SAMHSA National Registry, with growing RCT support for depression, PTSD and rheumatoid arthritis. It is now one of the most widely used trauma therapies in the world.
Will I dissociate or split if I do parts work?
Done well, IFS is the opposite of dissociation — it consciously, gently re-integrates parts that were already there. Trained therapists pace the work carefully, especially with trauma.
