Depression in Indian seniors — signs families often miss
Depression in seniors often arrives as silence, pain or irritability — not as the word depression.
Older Indian adults are often allowed to be physically ill but not emotionally unwell. Families may treat withdrawal, sleep disturbance and hopelessness as normal ageing, missing a treatable condition.
What I see clinically
Senior depression can present as body pain, loss of appetite, memory complaints, irritability, excessive worry about health, religious guilt, sleep changes, or repeated statements that they are a burden. Loneliness after retirement, bereavement and children moving away are common triggers.
What to do this week
Start with a medical review to rule out thyroid, B12, medication effects, pain and neurological issues. Then address rhythm: daylight, movement, social contact, meaningful role and sleep. Speak respectfully: 'This is treatable' lands better than 'you are depressed'. Tele-consults can work well if mobility is limited.
When to get help
Any talk of being a burden, wanting to die, refusing food, severe confusion or sudden functional decline needs urgent assessment. Do not assume age explains suffering. Treatable depression should not be allowed to masquerade as old age.
