Anger management in Indian families — beyond shouting or silence
Anger that is swallowed becomes resentment. Anger that is discharged carelessly becomes damage.
Indian families often offer two anger scripts: suppress it for harmony, or explode because no one listened earlier. Neither produces safety. Anger needs regulation and communication, in that order.
What I see clinically
Family anger loops usually contain old hierarchy, unspoken expectations, money stress, gendered labour and years of indirect communication. The current fight is rarely only about the current event.
What to do this week
Use a pause protocol: name the anger, step away for 20 minutes, regulate the body, return with one specific request. Replace 'you always' with 'when this happens, I feel, and I need'. Repair after rupture: acknowledge impact before explaining intention.
When to get help
If anger includes threats, violence, intimidation, breaking objects or fear in the household, this is a safety issue. Therapy can help anger; it must not be used to excuse harm.
