Why Indian high performers burn out earlier — the silent CR signs

By the time most high performers admit they are burning out, the burnout is already 18 months old. These are the earlier signs.


The pattern in my consulting room is depressingly consistent. A consultant in her early thirties at a Big Four firm. A founder in his late twenties on his second startup. A surgeon, a senior associate at a tier-one law firm, a fast-tracked banker. They walk in not because they have collapsed, but because something underneath has gone quiet — and they cannot name what.

Most of them are still hitting their numbers. That is precisely the problem.

The four silent signs I look for

First, recovery efficiency drops. The same weekend that used to reset the system no longer does. Sunday night is now indistinguishable from Monday morning. Second, the inner narrator turns flat — not negative, just flat. Wins do not register. Losses do, but quietly. Third, the body starts speaking in small currencies — a stiff jaw on waking, a chest that does not fully expand, hands that are colder than they used to be. Fourth, the appetite for novelty disappears. New restaurants, new music, new ideas — all start to feel like more work.

None of these will show up on a PHQ-9. All four together is early-stage burnout, and it is the easiest stage to reverse.

Why Indian high performers hit it earlier

Three structural reasons. One — the joint family expectation that work success is a moral obligation, not a personal preference, removes the off-switch that exists in less collectivist cultures. Two — the manager pipeline in most Indian firms still rewards visibility over output, which extends the working day past the point of recovery. Three — the social cost of saying 'I need a break' is unusually high; most high performers do not have a single colleague they can say it to without consequence.

The CR protocol I prescribe before collapse

A non-negotiable wake time across all seven days, anchored within a 30-minute window. Two daily 4-minute paced-breath sessions (4 in, 7 out) — one mid-morning, one mid-afternoon. One 90-minute fully analog block per week — phone in another room, no input devices. A weekly 'load audit' on Sunday evening: which three obligations consumed disproportionate energy, and what is the smallest negotiation that could change one of them by next month.

Patients who run this protocol for six weeks rarely meet diagnostic criteria for burnout. Patients who wait until the collapse phase need 4–6 months to recover the same ground.

When to bring a clinician in

If two or more of the silent signs have been present for more than eight weeks, take the MBI-short and PHQ-9 on this site.
