Suicidal thoughts — what to do in India right now

If part of you wants to die and part of you is still reading, we speak to the part that wants to live.

Suicidal thoughts are a medical and psychological emergency signal, not a moral failure. They usually mean pain has exceeded perceived options. The task is to increase safety and reduce aloneness immediately.

What I see clinically

Risk rises when thoughts become specific, when there is a plan, access to means, intoxication, recent loss, severe insomnia, hopelessness, or a sudden calm after agitation. Even passive thoughts like 'I wish I would not wake up' deserve care.

What to do this week

Do not stay alone. Move away from means. Call someone and say the direct sentence: 'I am not safe alone right now.' In India, call Tele-MANAS 14416 or emergency 112. If risk is immediate, go to the nearest hospital emergency. If helping someone else, stay with them and involve emergency support.

When to get help

This article is not a substitute for crisis care. If there is any immediate risk, call emergency services now. If the danger has passed, book a clinician urgently anyway; surviving the night is step one, building a treatment plan is step two.
