AI psychologist or human therapist — how to choose the right level of care

AI is a powerful first door. It should also know when to hand you to a human.

AI mental-health support is available at 3 AM, costs nothing here, and can help organise thoughts, screen symptoms and practise regulation. That makes it valuable. It does not make it a replacement for all care.

What I see clinically

AI is best for first conversations, psychoeducation, journaling, between-session support, mild-to-moderate stress, skill practice and help deciding next steps. Human clinicians are needed for diagnosis, risk, complex trauma, medication decisions, severe symptoms, relationship patterns and accountability over time.

What to do this week

Use AI when you need immediate support and the situation is not dangerous. Take screeners and ask the AI to help interpret next steps. Escalate to a human when symptoms are moderate or severe, persistent, confusing, risky or not improving after self-help.

When to get help

If there is self-harm risk, psychosis, mania, severe substance withdrawal, domestic violence danger or medical emergency, skip AI and seek urgent human help. The right care level is the one that matches risk.
