Pregnancy anxiety in India — what is normal and what needs help
Pregnancy worry is common. Pregnancy anxiety is when worry starts running the pregnancy.
Indian pregnancy often comes with medical appointments, family advice, rituals, restrictions and constant monitoring. Some worry is expected. But when worry becomes relentless, the mother deserves care, not lectures about staying positive.
What I see clinically
Pregnancy anxiety presents as repeated reassurance-seeking, fear of miscarriage despite medical reassurance, panic about scans, intrusive harm thoughts, sleep disruption, body scanning and fear of delivery. Family over-involvement can intensify the loop even when intentions are loving.
What to do this week
Choose one primary medical source and reduce contradictory advice. Write down questions for appointments rather than googling at midnight. Protect sleep and food rhythm. Practise slow exhale breathing when body sensations trigger alarm. Use therapy for uncertainty tolerance, not only reassurance.
When to get help
Seek clinical help if anxiety prevents sleep, eating, appointments or daily functioning, or if intrusive thoughts become frightening. If there are thoughts of self-harm, call Tele-MANAS 14416 or emergency care immediately. Perinatal mental health is health care, not optional wellness.
