Fertility treatment and mental health in India — surviving IVF stress
Fertility treatment turns biology into a monthly scoreboard. The mind needs protection.
IVF and fertility treatment can be medically hopeful and psychologically brutal. In India, the stress is amplified by family pressure, secrecy, cost and the assumption that parenthood is the only acceptable adult future.
What I see clinically
The cycle creates repeated hope and grief: scans, injections, waiting, results, comparison, advice, blame. Patients often describe living in two-week emotional units. Couples may polarise, with one partner wanting to talk constantly and the other avoiding because helplessness feels unbearable.
What to do this week
Create a treatment communication boundary: who knows, what they are told, and when updates are shared. Schedule non-fertility couple time. Decide in advance how many cycles, what financial limit, and what emotional support is required. Therapy helps hold grief and decision-making separately.
When to get help
If treatment causes depression, panic, marital breakdown, obsessive checking or thoughts of self-harm, involve a clinician. The desire for a child should not require the disappearance of the person trying to become a parent.
