Breakup depression in India — heartbreak, family pressure and clinical signs
A breakup can be grief, identity loss and social crisis at the same time.
In India, breakups are often complicated by secrecy, marriage pressure, family judgement and the fear that time has been 'wasted'. The pain is not childish. It can be clinically significant.
What I see clinically
Normal heartbreak comes in waves and gradually creates more functioning. Depression after a breakup is more global: persistent hopelessness, inability to work, appetite and sleep disruption, self-blame, isolation, and the belief that life has no viable future without the relationship.
What to do this week
Stabilise the body before analysing the relationship. Fix wake time, food, movement and contact with one safe person. Remove repeated checking triggers for two weeks. Write the story once, not twenty times a day. Use the AI Psychologist to separate grief, guilt, longing and fear of the future.
When to get help
If there are thoughts of self-harm, stalking impulses, inability to function, or severe depression beyond two weeks, get help. Love can end without your life ending; therapy helps the nervous system learn that truth before the mind fully believes it.
