Unemployment depression in India — when job search becomes identity collapse

A job loss is not only income loss. In India, it can feel like status, future and family safety collapsing together.

Unemployment and layoffs affect the mind because work carries structure, social proof, money, identity and family expectation. Losing it can produce grief and threat at the same time.

What I see clinically

The dangerous loop is rejection, shame, avoidance, sleep reversal, fewer applications, more shame. Families may respond with pressure that is meant as support but experienced as surveillance.

What to do this week

Create a job-search container: fixed hours, measurable actions, and a stop time. Keep wake time stable. Tell family what support helps and what does not. Add one competence activity outside job search so identity is not entirely dependent on recruiter replies.

When to get help

If unemployment leads to persistent depression, thoughts of self-harm, inability to apply, or substance use, get help. Treatment does not solve the job market, but it protects the person navigating it.
