Free mental-health resources in India — what is safe, useful and available now

Cost should never be the reason the first conversation does not happen.

Free mental-health support is not a full substitute for specialist care, but it can be the bridge that gets someone through the first night, the first week, or the first honest conversation.

What I see clinically

The safest free resources are those with clear boundaries: crisis helplines for acute risk, validated screeners for self-assessment, psychoeducation from qualified sources, and structured AI first-aid that knows when to escalate. The unsafe layer is advice from unqualified influencers, anonymous diagnosis groups, and anyone selling miracle cures after a questionnaire.

What to do this week

Save Tele-MANAS 14416 and emergency 112. If distress is not immediately dangerous, take a screener relevant to the symptom: PHQ-9 for depression, GAD-7 for anxiety, ISI for sleep, K-10 for distress. Use the AI Psychologist here to interpret the result and plan the next step. If you need human care, look for government hospital psychiatry OPDs, university clinics and verified low-cost therapists.

When to get help

Free support is enough only while risk is low and functioning is mostly intact. If there are suicidal thoughts, self-harm, psychosis, mania, severe substance withdrawal, or inability to work, eat or sleep, move to urgent human care. The free layer is a doorway, not a ceiling.
