Online therapy cost in India — a 2026 guide

Most Indian platforms hide their prices behind a lead form. Here is the honest map — what things cost, why they cost that, and how to choose.

Every week I get the same message from a stranger on Instagram: 'Doctor, how much does online therapy really cost in India?' The answer varies more than most people realise, and the ranges published by platforms are often the top of the funnel, not the real price you'll pay.

This is the 2026 map, written honestly, from inside the field.

The market range

In 2026, credentialed online psychologists in India charge between ₹1,500 and ₹5,000 per 45–60 minute session. Junior clinicians (MPhil in training, RCI-registered less than three years) cluster around ₹1,500–2,500. Mid-career (5–10 years) cluster around ₹2,500–3,500. Senior clinicians with 10+ years, hospital affiliations or specialised training reach ₹3,500–5,000+. Psychiatrists (MD) sit at the top, often ₹2,000–4,000 for a follow-up and ₹4,000–7,000 for a first consultation.

What Indian insurance actually covers

As of 2026, most Indian health insurers still don't reimburse outpatient psychology consultations, even though the IRDAI mandate to cover mental illness on par with physical is now years old. Inpatient psychiatric admission is generally covered; the 45-minute therapy session in your bedroom typically is not. Ask for a clinical receipt with the ICD-10 code and submit; a small but growing minority of insurers reimburse. Corporate EAPs are more reliable than personal health insurance for this purpose.

The AI and self-help stack

A free 24×7 AI Psychologist plus validated screeners (PHQ-9, GAD-7, ISI, K-10) will cost you nothing and can carry a substantial fraction of low-to-moderate distress. This is the layer I built CheckMentalHealth.in around. It's not a substitute for a clinician when the case needs one — but for the first-aid layer and between-session support, it works and it doesn't cost anything.

How to choose without getting fleeced

Verify RCI registration for a psychologist or MCI for a psychiatrist. Ask if the fee is per session or a mandated package. Confirm whether cancellation less than 24 hours in advance is charged. Prefer clinicians who publish their prices openly on their booking page — opacity is a red flag. And treat a first session as a fit-check: if the working alliance isn't there in two sessions, try someone else, without guilt.
