Health anxiety and Googling symptoms — how the loop works
The search that promises certainty usually teaches the brain to need the next search.
Health anxiety is not pretending. The sensations feel real because they are real. The problem is the meaning the brain attaches to them, and the reassurance behaviours that accidentally strengthen the alarm.
What I see clinically
The loop is predictable: sensation, catastrophic interpretation, Google search, temporary relief or new fear, body scanning, more sensations. Medical tests may reassure for hours or days, then the doubt returns in a new form.
What to do this week
Get appropriate medical evaluation once, then build a reassurance plan. Delay Googling by 30 minutes, then 60, then a day. Track triggers: fatigue, caffeine, conflict, poor sleep. Use paced breathing and attention widening when scanning begins. Therapy targets intolerance of uncertainty, not the body itself.
When to get help
If health worry consumes more than an hour a day, leads to repeated tests, prevents work, or causes panic, take the GAD-7 and book help. If a symptom is medically new or severe, seek medical care; health anxiety treatment should not mean ignoring real red flags.
