Cannabis, bhang and mental health — what Indian users should know

Natural does not mean psychologically neutral.

Cannabis use in India ranges from occasional bhang to frequent high-potency products. The clinical conversation needs nuance: not panic, not denial, and certainly not the myth that it is harmless for every brain.

What I see clinically

Cannabis can worsen anxiety, panic, motivation, memory and sleep architecture in some users. In vulnerable people, especially with family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, it can increase risk of serious psychiatric episodes. Daily use often becomes a quiet regulator for boredom, stress or sleep.

What to do this week

Ask what function it serves. Relaxation, sleep, appetite, social ease, escape? Then replace that function deliberately. If reducing, taper frequency and avoid mixing with alcohol. Track anxiety, motivation and sleep for four weeks. Be honest about potency and pattern; clinicians cannot help with a sanitised version.

When to get help

Seek urgent help if cannabis use is followed by paranoia, voices, extreme panic, mania, confusion or inability to function. Seek planned help if stopping feels impossible or life has narrowed around use.
