Anxiety is not a character flaw

If you've ever wondered why being a thoughtful person seems to come bundled with anxiety, this is for you.

A pattern I see weekly: someone walks into the consulting room — capable at work, kind to others, intellectually sharp — and starts the session by apologising for being there. They tell me they 'should be able to handle this'. They tell me they don't know why something so 'small' is breaking them.

I want to address that head-on. Anxiety is not a character flaw. It is, more often than not, the cost of having a finely-tuned threat-detection system in a world that has more low-grade threats than it has time to discharge them.

The biology, briefly

The amygdala doesn't ask permission. It scans your environment hundreds of times a second and tags anything that pattern-matches to past hurt, embarrassment, loss or surprise. In a less complex life, those tags would discharge through movement, sleep and human contact. In a modern Indian urban life — long commutes, screens, performative work, fragmented sleep — the discharge mechanisms are partly disabled. The signals stack.

What this means for treatment

It means we don't try to disable the alarm — we don't want to. We work on three things instead: the calibration (what counts as a threat), the discharge (how the body comes down), and the meaning (what the alarm is taken to say about you). Calibrate, discharge, re-author. That's the clinical core of CR for anxiety.

Where to start

Take the GAD-7 on this site. Sit with the result. Then have a conversation with the AI Psychologist about what you found. If your score is in the moderate or severe band, please book a consultation. There is real, structured help available, and most patients feel meaningful change inside 4–6 weeks.
