Academic failure in India — protecting a child after bad results
A result is information. It must not become a verdict on whether a child deserves dignity.
Exam results in India can feel life-defining. For a distressed student, a bad result may land not as disappointment but as identity collapse. The family's first response matters enormously.
What I see clinically
Risk rises when the student has perfectionism, prior depression, sleep deprivation, social comparison, family financial pressure or a history of being valued mainly for marks. Shame after results can become dangerous quickly.
What to do this week
First 24 hours: no lectures, no comparisons, no future threats. Ensure sleep, food and supervision. Say clearly: 'This result changes plans, not your worth.' After the acute emotion settles, review options with a teacher or counsellor and build a new plan.
When to get help
Any statement about dying, disappearing, being a burden or having no future must be taken seriously. Call Tele-MANAS 14416, emergency 112, or see a clinician immediately. No exam is worth a life.
