Lawyer burnout in India — billable hours, hierarchy and the anxious mind
In law, urgency becomes culture. The nervous system eventually sends the invoice.
Young lawyers in India often enter the profession expecting intensity. What surprises them is the chronicity: late nights, unpredictable seniors, adversarial tone, and the sense that availability is the real performance metric.
What I see clinically
The clinical pattern is anticipatory anxiety before messages, inability to switch off after filing, shallow sleep, Sunday dread, and a perfectionism that appears rational because mistakes can have consequences. Over time, the lawyer loses the ability to distinguish real urgency from inherited panic.
What to do this week
Create an urgency taxonomy with your team: immediate, today, this week, waiting. Ask for deadlines in writing where possible. Build a shutdown list at the end of each day so the brain does not rehearse open loops in bed. Use paced exhale breathing between calls; small resets prevent cumulative activation.
When to get help
If work anxiety causes panic, persistent insomnia, depression, substance reliance or relationship breakdown, consult. The goal is not to make an unhealthy system feel healthy; it is to preserve agency and make clear decisions from a regulated state.
