Founder burnout in India — why adrenaline stops looking like ambition

Startups can reward dysregulation so well that the founder mistakes it for personality.

Founder burnout is not ordinary tiredness with a better LinkedIn headline. It is a prolonged state where the body runs on threat chemistry while the mind calls it drive.

What I see clinically

Indian founders face a specific stack: family risk, investor timelines, talent churn, public comparison and the cultural romance of sacrifice. The warning signs are loss of strategic thinking, irritability with the team, sleep treated as optional, inability to feel wins, and private dread before every metrics review.

What to do this week

Protect decision quality as the clinical target. No major decision after midnight. Two recovery blocks per week that are calendar-protected like investor calls. One non-company relationship maintained deliberately. A weekly nervous-system audit: sleep, caffeine, alcohol, anger, body tension, and whether the work still has meaning beyond fear.

When to get help

If you are using alcohol, stimulants or sedatives to regulate, if panic is appearing, or if you have thoughts of disappearing from the company or life, involve a clinician immediately. The company needs a regulated founder more than a heroic one.
